Get some general information about Bungamati, its history, people and their culture

 

Bungamati is famous for the temple of Bunga-dyo. Buddhists worship it as a two-armed figure of Padmapani Lokesvara (a form of Avalokitesvara, the most important deity in the Mahayana Buddhism) whereas Hindus worship it as the Rato Machhendranath.

The town of Bunga or Bungamati lies about nine kilometres to the south of Kathmandu which isan exclusively Newar farming community. The inscriptions discovered here suggest the settlement already existed in the 7th century AD. Bungamati is famous for the temple of Bunga- dyo. Bungamati is a typical Newar settlement with a population of little over 8,000. Most of the people here are still dependent on agriculture which is slowly getting replaced as the younger generations are attracted in the jobs in the city or other business. There is also a significant number of people in Bungamati who depend on woodcraft for their livelihood.

Bungamati as a heritage tourism destination has so much to offer making it one of the important places to visit in Kathmandu valley for Nepalese as well as foreigners. The 2015 earthquake badly damaged this old town including the famous temple of Rato Macchendranath. Restoration reconstruction activities are being carried out by the locals with assistance from various national and international organizations.

 


How to reach Bungamati:

Bungamati is 7kms from Patan. There are various local bus services that ply to Bungamati which are usually crowded and not comfortable. We recommend you to hire a cab or use a chauffer service.
